Body Planes

Frontal and coronal plane: separates the body into anterior and posterior parts

Median and midsagittal plane: separates the body into right and left parts

Horizontal or transverse plane: separates the body into superior and inferior parts

Sagittal plane: any plane parallel to the median plane

Orientations

Cephalad/superior: toward the head or front end

Caudal/inferior: toward the feet or tail end

Anterior: toward the front side

Posterior: toward the back side

Medial: toward the midline

Lateral: away from the midline

Dorsal: toward the upper or outer side (such as the back side of the hand)

Voral: toward the lower or inner side (such as the palm side of the hand)

Proximal: [anatomy]1 toward the attachment point or center of the body;
[instrumentation/devices]2 toward the surgeon/health care provider

Distal: [anatomy]1 away from the attachment point or center of the body;
[instrumentation/devices]2 away from the surgeon/health care provider
